[A] SPELLS

Accio (ah-ci-o)
-
This charm summons an object to thee caster, potentially over a significant distance.
- It can be used in two ways: by casting the charm, and naming the object desired ("Accio Firebolt"), or by pointing the wand at the desired object during or immediately following the incantation to "pull" it towards you. In either case, the caster must concentrate upon the object they wish to summon in order for the charm to succeed. It would also appear that the caster must know at least the general location of the object he is trying to summon.

Aguamenti (ah-gwa-MEN-tee)
- It produces a jet of water from the wittch or wizard's wand.

Alohomora (ALO-HA-MORA)
- Used to open and unlock doors. Is not effective if the door is bewitched against this spell.

Anapneo (ah-NAHP-nee-oh)
- Clears the target's airway, if blocked..

Aparecium (ah-pah-REE-see-um)
- This spell makes invisible ink and perhhaps invisible items in general appear.

 

*Avada Kedavra (ah-VAH-dah keh-DAH-vrah)
- The Killing Curse

One of the three "Unforgivaable Curses". Causes instant, painless death, and leaves no physical signs of cause of death. There is no known counter-curse or blocking spell, but the spell can be blocked by physical cover (which will be heavily damaged in the process), and the caster is still required to aim to hit the target. This spell produces a flash of green light; just before it hits the target, a rushing sound (similar to an oncoming high-speed object) is heard.

 

Avis (AH-vis)
- The charm creates a flock of birds whicch pour forth from the caster's wand

Evanesco (eh-vah-NES-cop)
- Banishing Charm

It causes the targeted object too be thrown away from the caster; makes objects/substances disappear.

Cave Inimicum (Cave Inimicum)
- Spell used to strengthen an enclosure ffrom enemies.

Confringo

*Crucio (krOO-see-OH)
- The Cruciatus Curse
-
Inflicts great pain on the recippient of the curse. One of the three "Unforgivable Curses".

 

Defodio (deh-FOH-dee-oh)
- Gouging Spell
-
The spell causes deep gouges to appear in the object targeted by the spell.

Descendo (deh-SEN-doh)
- The spell likely cases any targeted objject to move downwards.

Deletrius (deh-LEE-tree-us)
- An erasure spell. It erases images and magical "after-effects".

Densaugeo (denz-OW-gay-oh)
- This charm makes the victim's teeth groow rapidly.

Deprimo (DEH-prih-moh)
- This spell places immense downward presssure upon its target, which may result in the violent fracturation of said target.

Diffindo (dif-FIN-doh)
- Severing Charm

Tears the target, or a specific area on the target.

Dissendium (dis-SEND-ee-um)
- Causes the statue of the humphbacked wiitch hiding the secret passage to Honeydukes to open up.

Duro (D(Y)OO-roh)
- This spell is said to turn its target tto stone.

Engorgio (en-GOR-jee-oh)
- Engorgement Charm

Causes objects to swell in size..

Episkey (eh-PIS-key)
- Used to heal relatively minor injuries..

Erecto (ee-RECK-toh or eh-RECK-toh)
- Used to erect a tent, or other structurre.

Evanesco (eh-van-ES-koh)
- Vanishing Spell
-
Makes something vanish.

Expecto Patronum (ek-SPEC-to pah-TRONE-um)
- Patronus Charm
-
The Patronus Charm is a defensivve spell, used to conjure an incarnation of the Witch's or Wizard's innermost positive emotions, to act as a protector. It can also be used to send messages.

Expelliarmus (ex-pel-lee-AHR-mus)
- Disarming Charm
-
This spell is used to disarm anoother wizard, typically by causing the victim's wand to fly out of reach. It also throws the wizard backwards a few feet when enough power is placed behind it. As demonstrated in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, simultaneous use of this spell by multiple witches or wizards on a single person can throw the wizard back more powerfully.

Expulso (eck-SPULL-soh)
- Causes objects hit by the spell to expllode, causing a powerful shock-wave

Ferula (fair-OO-lah)
- Creates a bandage and a splint.

Finite Incantatem/Finite (fi-NEE-tay in-can-TAH-tem)
- Counter-Spell

Negates spells or the effects off spells.

Flagrate (flag-RAH-tay or FLAG-rayt)
- With this spell, the caster's wand can leave fiery marks.

Furnunculus (fur-NUNG-kyoo-lus)
- Makes boils appear on the victim.

Geminio (jeh-MIH-nee-oh or geh-MIH-nee-oh)
- Creates a duplicate of any object cast upon.

Glisseo (GLISS-see-oh)
- Causes the steps on a stairway to flattten and form a ramp, slide, or chute.

Homenum Revelio (HOH-meh-num reh-VEH-lee-oh or reh-VAY-lee-oh)
- Indicates the presence of a human in thhe immediate vicinity of the caster.

Impedimenta (im-peh-dih-MEN-tah)
- Impediment Jinx, Impediment Curse

This hex is capable of tripping,, freezing, binding, knocking back and generally impeding the target's progress towards the caster. The extent to which the spell's specific action can be controlled by the caster is unclear.

 

*Imperio (im-PEER-ee-oh)
- The Imperius Curse

One of the three "Unforgivaable Curses". Places the subject in a dream-like state, in which he or she is utterly subject to the will of the caster, although those who are strong willed may learn to resist it.

 

Impervius (im-PER-vi-ous)
- This spell makes something repel (literrally, become impervious to) substances including water and sound.

Inanimatus Conjurus (in-an-ih-MAH-tus CON-jur-us)
- Most probably used to conjure an inanimmate object.

Incarcerous (in-CAR-ser-us)
- Ties someone or something up with ropess.

Incendio (in-SEND-ee-oh)
- Produces fire (or as it is usually desccribed, blue flames).

Langlock (LANG-lock)
- Glues the subject's tongue to the roof of their mouth. Created by the Half-Blood Prince.

Legilimens (Leg-IL-im-ens)
- Legilimency Spell

Levicorpus (Lev-i-CORE-pus)
- The victim is dangled upside-down by thheir ankles, sometimes accompanied by a flash of light (this may be a variant of the spell).

Liberacorpus (LEE-bear-a-CORE-pus)
- Counteracts Levicorpus. <

Locomotor (LOW-co-MOW-tor)
- The spell is always used with the name of a target, at which the wand is pointed (e.g. "Locomotor Trunk!"). The spell causes the named object to rise in the air and move around at the will of the caster.

Locomotor Mortis (LOW-co-MOW-tor MORE-tis)
- Leg-Locker Curse

Locks the legs together, preventting the victim from moving the legs in any fashion.

Lumos (LOO-[moss])
- Creates a narrow beam of light that shiines from the wand's tip, like a torch.

Mobiliarbus (Mow-BILL-ee-ARE-bus)
- Moves a tree. An unusually specific usee.

Mobilicorpus (Mow-BILL-i-CORE-pus)
- Levitates and moves bodies.

Morsmordre (Mors-MORE-derh)
- Dark Mark

Conjures the Dark Mark.

Muffliato (Muff-lee-AH-toe)
- This spell fills peoples' ears with an unidentifiable buzzing, to keep them from hearing nearby conversations.

Repello Muggletum (reh-PELL-loh MUGG-gull-tum or MUGG-gleh-tum or mugg-GLEE-tum)
- Muggle-Repelling Charm

Keeps Muggles away from wizardinng places, by causing them to remember important meetings they missed and to cause the Muggles in question to forget what they were doing.

Nox (Noks)
- Turns off the light produced by the >Lumos spell.

Obliviate (oh-BLIV-ee-ate or o-bliv-ee-AH-tay)
- Memory Charm
-
Used to hide a memory of a partiicular event.

Obscuro (ob-SK(Y)OOR-oh)
- Causes blindfold to appear over victim''s eyes, obstructing their view of their surroundings.

Oppugno (oh-PUG-no)
- Apparently causes animals or beings of lesser intelligence to attack.

Orchideous (or-KID-ee-us)
- Makes a bouquet of flowers appear out oof the caster's wand.

Pack (pac-k)
-  Packs a trunk, or perhaps any luggage.

Periculum (puh-RI-kyoo-lum)
- Spell used to send sparks skyward.

Piertotum Locomotor (pee-ayr-TOH-tum (or peer-TOH-tum) loh-koh-MOH-tor)
- Spell used to animate statues and suitss of armor to do the caster's bidding.

Peskipiksi Pesternomi ("Pesky pixie, pester no me!")
- Apparently causes Pixies to leave or at least desist from mischief-making.
- Lockhart confessed to being very poor ((perhaps almost at *Squib level) in most magical areas, and seems to have been willing to go to any length to make himself appear more competent. Hence, Peskipiksi Pesternomi may have been made up on the spot as a desperate attempt to control the situation. Alternatively, knowing that he would need the Pixie Banishing Hex since his reputation would require knowing it, he may have looked it up beforehand. In that case, he would be incorrectly remembering a Latin phrase that would perhaps be Pestis Piksi vexe neme, or something similar.

Petrificus Totalus (puh-TRIH-fuh-cus TOH-tle-us OR toh-TAH-lus)
- Full Body Bind

Used to temporarily make the vicctim be frozen in a position much like a soldier at attention; usually the person falls down.

Point Me (point-mi)
- Four-Point Spell

The Four-Point Spell causes the caster's wand tip to point to the north cardinal point, acting like a compass.

Portus (POUR-tuss)
- Turns an object into a Portkey, a devicce which transports the toucher to a desired destination, with a blue glow.

Prior Incantato (PRI-or In-can-TAH-toe)
- Makes a shadowy image of the effect of the last spell cast by a wand emerge from its tip. This is called an "echo" of the spell.

Protego (pro-TAY-go or prah-TEH-go)

The Shield Charm causes minor too moderate jinxes, curses, and hexes to rebound upon the attacker.

Protego Horribilis (pro-TAY-go/prah-TEH-go horr-oh-billis)
- A shield charm against the darkest magiic.

Protego Totalum (pro-TAY-go/prah-TEH-go toh-TALUM)
- Presumably does not allow anything to eenter into the area protected by the spell.

Reparo (re-pah-row)

Quietus (Quee-AY-tuss)
- Makes a magically magnified voice returrn to normal. A counter to Sonorus.

Reducio (Red-DUE-see-oh)
- Makes an enlarged object smaller. Counter-charm to Engorgio.

Reducto (re-DUK-toh)
- Reductor Curse

Blows apart or destroys objects in the caster's path. It is inferred from the books that this curse is usually invisible and silent, though it was used verbally in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Relashio (Re-LASH-ee-oh)
- Revulsion Jinx
-
A charm used to force someone orr something to release that which it holds or grapples by means of shooting fiery sparks out or, underwater, shooting hot bursts of water. Also causes victim of spell to simply release whatever they are holding at the time.

Rennervate (ree-NUR-vayt)
- A spell which brings you back to life after you have been struck with "stupefy" the stunning charm. Also brings someone out of unconsciousness.

Reparo (Re-PAR-oh)
- Used to repair objects.

Rictusempra (RIK-too-SEM-pra)
- Tickling Charm

Makes an enemy collapse in laughter.

Riddikulus (Ri-DIK-uh-lous)
- Boggart-Banishing Spell
-
A spell used when fighting a Boggart, "Riddikulus" forces the Boggart to take the appearance of an object the caster finds humorous, with the desire that laughter will weaken the Boggart.

Scourgify (sKUHR-GI-FY)
- Scouring Charm
-
Used to clean something.

Sectumsempra (SEC-tum-SEMP-ra)
- A spell that creates large, blood-oozing gashes on the subject. Invented by the Half-Blood Prince

Serpensortia (SER-pen-SORT-ia)
- Conjures a serpent from the spellcaster's wand.

Silencio (SIGH-len-see-OH)
- Silencing Charm

Makes something silent.

Sonorus

Magnifies the spellcaster's voicce when one's wand is pointing to the side of the casters neck

Specialis Revelio (speh-see-AH-liss reh-VEH-lee-oh or reh-VAY-lee-oh)
- Scarpin's Revelaspell

Apparently causes an object to show its hidden secrets or magical properties.

Stupefy (ST(Y)OO-peh-fye)

Stunning Spell, Stupefying Charm

Puts the victim in an unconsciouus state.

Tarantallegra (Ta-RAN-ta-LEG-rah)
-  Makes victim's legs dance uncontrollably (recalling the tarantella dance).

Tergeo (TUR-jee-oh)
- Siphoning Charm
-
A spell used to siphon matter from a surface, eg. blood, ink, dust, etc.

Waddiwasi (WAD-ee-WAH-see)
- Appears to launch small objects through the air.

Wingardium Leviosa (Win-GUARD-ee-um Le-vee-OH-sah)
- Levitation Chharm
-
Levitates objects.
